Multi-club ownership (MCO) has emerged as one of the most critical strategic models shaping the modern game. Once a niche model, it is now gaining significant traction among investors for its potential to enhance talent development and improve operational efficiency across markets. At the same time, MCOs present complex governance and operational challenges to ensure strategic alignment across different clubs.

To explore the model’s practical implications, Football Benchmark convened a select group of investors and football club executives for its first Multi-Club Ownership: Executive Program in Milan, Italy, on 25–26 June. Led by senior industry experts, the program combined case studies, market analysis, and peer learning to equip senior leaders with the insights and tools needed to assess and implement effective multi-club strategies.

Throughout the event, industry speakers shared valuable operational insights based on their real-world experiences.

One of the program's themes was the diversity of MCO strategies being adopted across the football landscape. This distinction was highlighted by Martyn Hawkins, whose insights reflected the reality for many investors in the space.

Johannes Spors, Global Technical Director at Sport Republic, discussed the need to strike the right balance between overarching strategic alignment and respecting the unique context and needs of each club within a multi-club structure.

Marc Cavaliero and Jaime Cambreleng, Partners at Cambreleng & Cavaliero, addressed the evolving regulatory landscape, highlighting the need to balance attracting investment into clubs with managing growing legal complexity across different jurisdictions.

Alongside external speakers, members of Football Benchmark’s own senior team, including Pedro Iriondo, Managing Director of Advisory, and Antonio Di Cianni, Head of Football Finance & Strategy, contributed to the discussions, drawing on extensive experience advising clubs and investors on complex ownership models.

The program highlighted the importance of a well-defined investor strategy as the foundation for successful MCO initiatives. From identifying the right clubs to establishing governance structures and implementing the operational model, every decision must align with long-term objectives.

As the landscape continues to evolve, asking the right questions and applying informed, strategic thinking will remain essential.
